10 things you can do to improve your mood

Life is full of ebbs and flows; one moment we are feeling jubilant, the very next moment you may feel down due to any unexpected occurrences. This applies to everyone on this planet, so our personal goal is to learn to cope with adversity, in order to maintain our own good mental health. Read on to find out 10 ways that help improve your mood.

1. Build up your strength

What do you enjoy doing? What is it that you are good at and that you would lose yourself in? Be it a type of sport, music instrument, journaling, cooking or crafting, as long as it is something that would make you happy and mentally occupied, do it more often. By building up on your strength and that it is something that you enjoy doing, not only would it distract yourself from the negative energy, but also boost your self-confidence which would, as a result, make yourself feel valued.

2. Show some love to people around you

Rather than procrastinating in your room alone, why don’t you pay attention to the people that you love? What about preparing dinner for your loved ones, or simply asking them about what is going on in their lives? Small talk or small acts that show your care for people give them warmth, and it is likely that the person would reciprocate by making you feel better as well.

3. Go for a ramble in nature

At some point, you might really need to take a breather, so go out for a ramble in nature. Listen to the birds chirping, feel the breeze blowing on your face, and let the spirit of nature embrace your soul. The beauty of nature is limitless, let it inspire you.

4. Plan a getaway

It’s always good to take a break when things are getting a bit too overwhelming. You can always plan a holiday to take your mind off everything. Go see the world, go experience different cultures and taste different cuisines, a getaway may open your eyes, and make you see things from a very different perspective.

5. Get plenty of sleep

Perhaps sleeping may not solve the problem that has been stressing you out for days. However, getting quality sleep helps to pause your thoughts and pull you up from the overthinking abyss. If you are finding it hard to fall asleep, try to do some wind-down activities before bed, such as journaling, watching some funny series on Netflix, etc.

6. Be sociable

There’s always this list of people who have their shoulders for you to cry on. When you feel frazzled or desperate in life, it is vital not to hide but talk to those who care about you. Ask them out and do something together, better leave your phones aside and keep it as an activity that allows face-to-face interaction.

7. Accept who you are

‘Nobody is perfect!’ This might sound corny but it’s true, oftentimes we are disgruntled because of our own imperfections and this would really affect our self-esteem. Accept that you are a unique individual and that you cannot control every aspect of your life, as such, you would start to appreciate who you are.

8. Try something new

While a daily routine can be comforting, it can also feel repetitive and mundane. Exploring something new can help stir things up and add some fun into your life. Why not consider a new hobby, eating at a new restaurant, taking a different route home or going somewhere you have always wanted to visit? The change may do you good and uplift your mood.

9. Be grateful

We should all learn to cultivate gratitude. Never take things for granted and count the blessings every day. Try to list down things that you are grateful for before you go to bed and keep this as a routine. By and large, you get to choose whether you want to be in a state of complaint or gratitude.

10. Stay healthy physically

Exercising regularly is essential to complement your mental health with good physical health. Regular exercise keeps your brain and vital organs healthy, by helping the body release vital hormones. If you aren’t sure where to begin with exercise, why not try one of the wellness and fitness classes down at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel’s AIA Vitality Park? There are many different classes to choose from and they are all led by qualified trainers.
