Things to do in Hong Kong
As a former British colony, there are many unique heritage buildings in Hong Kong that have been preserved and revitalised for different purposes. Tucked in the frenetic business heart of the city, Central, there are two historic sites which have been reinvigorated and are popular cultural sites amongst locals and tourists. PMQ and Tai Kwun, both packed with modern art displays, local shops, art and cultural exhibitions, events and more. These are two ideal destinations to be listed on your weekend agenda.
PMQ stands for ‘Police Married Quarters’, which first served as the Central School’s campus back in 1862, then a dormitory for police officers, and today, a landmark for creative industries.
Since PMQ started its operation in 2014, it has been rolling out a variety of creative lifestyle experiences where visitors can partake in workshops, events, and classes at the venue. From painting to jewellery making, cooking to crafting, it’s a place to learn and share, and most importantly, to let your creativity run free.
Apart from workshops and classes, PMQ is also home to more than 100 local young entrepreneurs. Shoppers can not only support local young artists and designers but also find a wide range of products with unique individual styles if high street styles are too much for you.
Last but not least, there are also a few cosy cafes and dining places, which provide the perfect place to hang around on weekends, a place where you can slow your pace and enjoy life from a different perspective.
Address: PMQ, 35 Aberdeen Street, Central
PMQ Opening Hours: 7:00 am – 11:00 pm

Tai Kwun is the former Central Police Station built from 1841 to 1925, which has been transformed into a centre for heritage and arts which encompasses a blend of elements including heritage, contemporary art, performing arts and lifestyle enjoyment.
With more than 170 years of rich history, the site allows visitors to go back in time and explore the stories behind the cells, the court, the offices, and more during the colonial period. There are guided tours available but visitors can also opt for a self-guided tour.
Inside Tai Kwun there is also Tai Kwun Contemporary, where a number of art exhibitions and programmes are held regularly. Visitors can take part in a variety of workshops in Tai Kwun, including plant art and touch ceramic. After discovering some of the great local design shops, you may end up not wanting to leave this place so you can enjoy one of the classic cafes or bars within the venue.
